In the olden days, folks would light their way by carrying lanterns around from room to room and even outdoors. French outdoor furniture maker Fermob garnered inspiration from these simpler times to come up with their double-duty Balad h25 lamp, a wireless LED lantern that can be hung from a lampstand or detached and carried around wherever you need a little extra light.

Named for the verb “se balader”, which means “to walk around” in French, the Balad is Fermob’s first foray into the world of lighting. Designed by product designer Tristan Lohner the playful lantern, which some say reminds them of person wearing a set of headphones, comes in six different colors (verbena, aubergine, fuchsia, storm grey, nutmeg and carrot) and two sizes (small and large). A large button on the side of the lamp allows users to toggle between a bright task light and a dimmer ambient light.

“The idea behind Balad is to create your own light,” says Lohner. “Choose the size and color, decide whether to place it or hang it, make it into a lamp for the house or take it with you for a beach party.” The bulbous lamps, made of rotation-molded polyethelyne and aluminum, are currently on display at Wanted Design for NYCxDesign Week in New York City.

One of the best and most useful features of the Balad is its ability to be charged via an included USB cable, and then detached for a battery life of 7-12 hours.

Fermob will be releasing steel stands for the lanterns in two sizes soon. The stands will be available in coordinating colors. The Balad lamp runs from $123 (small) to $262 (large). Pricing for the stands will be available soon.
